I was around twelve when my grandmother passed away. We were not particularly close, but her absence left something behind that was hard to define.
When her house was emptied, her belongings were divided among the family. Among the objects my mother brought back was a Japanese music doll, old and likely from the 60's or 70's. I only really noticed that one object. There was something about it that held presence.
I placed it high on a shelf in my room, thinking it might give the space a kind of retro character among all the other random things I had.
Soon enough, Just as I would drift toward sleep, the doll would begin to play. Sometimes a short sequence of sound, sometimes just a single tone, emerging from stillness.
At first, I tried to explain it away. I even attempted to block the mechanism with a folded piece of paper, trying to interrupt whatever invisible trigger had awakened it.
It didn’t.
Eventually, I just accepted it. The doll plays at night. I don’t claim to know why.
Physics offers explanations - temperature shifts, humidity, mechanical tension slowly releasing. The connection to loss gives the whole thing a more supernatural feeling, of course. And somewhere between those explanations, something unresolved remains.
Not necessarily supernatural. Not necessarily rational either.
Just… unresolved.
And perhaps that is the point. everything carries that same condition.
Objects are not neutral. Neither are places, nor machines, nor people. Everything accumulates residue - of time, of touch, of absence. Even consciousness itself feels like a layered interference pattern of what has been experienced, remembered, and lost.
In that sense, everything is haunted.
Not as metaphor. Not as superstition. But as structure.
These creations come from that understanding.
They are built at the intersection of mechanics and memory, where precision engineering meets something less measurable - something closer to atmosphere, distortion, and echo. A system that remembers more than it should, that carries fragments of an unseen presence .
